5/29/2023 0 Comments Wild beauty a novelBoth Oscar Wilde and Elizabeth Gaskell, the author of Mary Barton and North and South, were ‘Victorian’ in that they were both writing and publishing their work in Britain during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).īut whereas Gaskell, writing in the 1840s, 1850s, and 1860s, wrote ‘realist’ novels about the plight of factory workers in northern England, Wilde wrote a fantastical horror story about upper-class men who are able to stay forever young and spotless while their portraits decay in their attic. We tend to speak conveniently of ‘periods’ or ‘movements’ or ‘eras’ in literary history, but these labels aren’t always useful. But whereas Pater talked of ‘new impressions’, Lord Henry (or Wilde, in his novel) took this up a notch, calling for new ‘sensations’. Lord Henry Wotton is very much the voice of the aesthetic movement in the novel, and many of his pronouncements echo those made by the prominent art critic (under whom Wilde had studied at Oxford), Walter Pater. To find the novel’s value as a book of the aesthetic movement, we need look no further than Wilde’s preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray, in which he states, for instance, that ‘there is no such thing as a moral or immoral book’ (what matters is whether the book is written well or not) and ‘all art is quite useless’ (art shouldn’t change the world: art exists as, and for, itself, and no more).

If yes, please recommend to me some of Eloisa James' novels. Ok, so this is my review of Eloisa James' Fool For Love. This book is not for you guys to read yet. It's because this story has a lot of steamy scenes and adult conversations. However, I need to be honest that FFL is not suitable for teenagers under 18. I highly recommend this novel to my fellow bookworms who are into the historical romance genre and looking for something light to read. Yes, I'm now a member of the Eloisa James fandom ^_^ I rate this novel 9/10. Reading FFL makes me want to read more of Eloisa James' work. I also like the way Simon seduces Henrietta. I like the way James' describes all the romantic scenes in FFL. This story has a lot of steamy romantic scenes. One of Simon & Henrietta's lovemaking scenes in Fool For Love (Image: My Artstagram is a very romantic read. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Halfway Dead by Terry MaggertDon’t get me wrong, there’s definitely some tension when the dead bodies start showing up, and the sexy vampire comes into town. It has all the qualities of a good PNR or UF, but it stands out by the calmness that the story gives off. I knew the moment I saw the cover to this book that it would be different. With the help of Gus, and Gran, and a rugged cop who really does want to save the world, she’ll fight to bring a ghost home, and deliver justice to a murderer who hides in the cool, mysterious green of a forest gone mad with magic. The threat is real, but Carlie’s magic is born of a pure spirit. Like the forest shadows, danger can run deep. There are ghosts in the forest, and one of them cries out to Carlie across the years–Come find me. Major Pickford asks Carlie to lead him into the deepest shadows of the forest to find a mythical circle of chestnut trees, thought lost to forever to mankind. When a blonde stranger sits at the diner counter and calls her by name, that balance is gone. Carlie spends her days cooking at the finest-and only-real diner in town, and her life is a balance between magic and the mundane, just as she likes it. Carlie loves her enormous familiar, Gus, who is twenty-five pounds of judgmental Maine Coon cat, and she positively worships her Grandmother, a witch of incredible power and wisdom. She loves her town of Halfway, NY-a tourist destination nestled on the shores of an Adirondack lake. 5/28/2023 0 Comments The black company novelThe first book in the omnibus and series, The Black Company was a good start and introduction to the series but not an easy one to get into for me. Same as my review for Riyria Revelations omnibuses, I won’t be writing a full review for each book but I’ll write a mini-review for each book in this volume instead. These three made up for the first story arc in the series: Books of the North story arc. Chronicles of the Black Company omnibus comprises of the first three books in the series: The Black Company, Shadows Linger, and The White Rose. The differences between Erikson and Cook would be that Erikson’s series is gigantically more massive in scope and difficulty. There were many aspects that displayed them similarities between the Bridgeburners and the Black Company, a storytelling style that drops readers into the midst of the plot without any clear explanation, just to name a few without spoilers. The Chronicles of the Black Company by Glen Cook is a series that Steven Erikson has praised intensely for a long time now, it’s even considered to be his inspiration for Malazan Book of the Fallen and after reading this omnibus, I can certainly see why. Whether through comics, books, television, or movies, a child’s first exposure to science fiction often involved a journey to or a visitor from Mars. Since the publication in 1895 of Percival Lowell’s Mars, wherein the astronomer suggested that the so-called ‘canals’ on that planet were proof that an ancient race had once inhabited the barren world, tales of Martians have abounded. This may be the adventure Gilbert always wished for. If only he can survive. But they sprint to Aoléon’s saucer and escape only to be pursued by the U.S. Farmer Johnson also investigates the strange light, and thinking that Gilbert and Aoléon are vandals, he chases them. More than a decade ago, she left the sea and her scientific career behind to raise a family in landlocked Austin, Texas. Juli Berwald's journey into the world of jellyfish is a personal one. Long ignored by science, they may be a key to ecosystem stability. They produce some of the deadliest toxins on the planet and still remain undeniably alluring. They look simple, yet their propulsion systems are so advanced that engineers are just learning how to mimic them. They have no centralized brain, but they see and feel and react to their environment in complex ways. A former ocean scientist goes in pursuit of the slippery story of jellyfish, rediscovering her passion for marine science and the sea's imperiled ecosystems. 5/27/2023 0 Comments Books similar to no exitBut she keeps learning and adapting, and by the time we get to a certain scene involving a certain door hinge, she’s grown to understand what she’s capable of, the cost, the odds… and she does it anyway. My goal was for Darby’s decision-making to evolve as she does – early on, for example, she makes the same errors that I might make in that scenario. Were there any times that your main character, Darby, surprised you? Or made you think to yourself ‘Not even I would do that…’Ī: I love underdog stories – especially ones where the protagonist understands they’re signing up for a losing battle, but they persist anyway because it’s the right thing to do. The main character isn’t particularly brave at first glance but she continuously makes choices that have the reader rooting for her success, proving her fearlessness, and asking themselves what they would do in her place. 5/27/2023 0 Comments Night Whispers by Charles Veley(Instead of all those elaborate, dangerous, expensive schemes, he could just buy the blood!) Lots of glittering needles to scare those so disposed-but overall a tacky hybrid that never comes even halfway up to Coma level. And, throughout, the motivation of the Evil Leader is tenuous at best. (The Leader of the Gathering has devised a special power mix of endomorphins, brain proteins, and cocaine-crystallized into The Pill and taken daily for endless energy.) Will Judith join the monthly orgies of The Gathering? Will she too receive shots of scopolamine that wipe out memory of The Gathering's darkest doings? Unfortunately, by the time those questions are resolved, the so-so plottings here have lapsed further, into conventional melodramatic knife-and-gun stuff. Actually, Judith's voices come from some secretly planted microphones she's being purposely drained of energy so that she will agree to join Philip's medical conspiracy-a bunch of vampire-amnesiacs called The Gathering that wants to build up a bank of endomorphins separated from the stolen blood of patients in Judith's hospital. Her lover Philip, an oral surgeon, suggests she try a new pill that he's been taking, but she resists. Judith Weston, whose specialty is obstetrical surgery (she's developed a new mode for clearing the fallopian tubes and facilitating pregnancy), is not only run-down from overwork but also has begun hearing voices in her office and her apartment.
